| Elle J Small is an experienced and respected music journalist and presenter. Her life-long passion has taken her across the globe, interviewing established artists and faces in far-flung countries such as America, Spain, Barbados and France. The young journalist has contributed features to a broad selection of publications, including Evening Standard, Dazed & Confused, The Face, Mixmag, Sleaze Nation, Touch, Knowledge, Blues & Soul, Deuce, Tense, Tred (JD Sports' magazine), Rip 'n Burn and www.fmagazine.com At the tender age of 14 Elle J could be found sneaking into hardcore/ jungle raves such as Dreamscape and Fusion. White gloves firmly on. Obsessed with the DJ and MC culture, by the late 90's she had fallen head over heels in love with garage music. Weekends were then devoted to raving 24/7 at the notorious La Cosa Nostra and Twice As Nice. After spending six months travelling Miami and New York (with Nas and Dr Dre on repeat) Elle J returned to London to discover one of her best mates had become an international superstar DJ. Thinking she too should probably do something with her life the, then, 19 year-old phoned up Glasgow-based music mag, Wax and told them they needed her. They begrudgingly agreed. Elle J's writing debut was a highly controversial piece; an in-depth report on violence and guns in the UK garage scene - a topic which, at the time, had barely been discussed by insiders, let alone tackled by the media. Hundreds of copycat features followed. She went on to become the first ever journalist to interview Ms Dynamite and was quickly appointed Urban Editor at Ministry magazine. Elle J's writing style is extremely versatile, and can be either ridiculously rude or profoundly serious. Outspoken and extremely confident, her cheeky and gruelling interview technique has left many an eyebrow raised (she once told Pharrell Williams he laughed like a hyena and then asked him to record her answer-phone message. He did). In 2002 Artikal films approached Elle J to present a youth music show, aired on YCTV. Her mischievous personality has since been captured on film by: The MOBO Unsung competition (YCTV), www.rwdmag.com, The Knowledge Drum 'n Bass Awards (Rapture) and the award-winning www.fmagazine.com. In fact F magazine were so impressed with her work they asked Elle J to join them as Music Editor. Numerous labels call upon Elle J to write their artists' biogs and, on the flipside, record voice-overs for their prestigious ads. While her roots lie within urban music, Elle J has a deep passion for anything "that makes me nod my head or shake my derrière." We'd need around another ten pages to list all the artists she has interrogated, so here's just a handful: Outkast, N*E*R*D, MOBY, Destiny's Child, G-Unit, Dizzee Rascal, The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Groove Armada, Jamelia, Roni Size, Natasha Beddingfield, Shy FX, Lady Sovereign, Sister Bliss, Erick Morillo and... OK, we'll shut up now. |
